The COVID19 pandemic has changed the world in an unprecedented way impacting nearly every aspect of human life causing human death and global economic meltdown at epic proportions1. While nontherapeutic interventions (e.g. social distancing, face masks, monitoring health) are critical to reducing the spread of this infection, pharmaceuticals (vaccines and therapeutics) will be essential in prophylaxis and treating those infected. There is an unprecedented effort with collaborations across academia, healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical industry and regulatory agencies to make safe and effective vaccines and drugs available within an equally unprecedented timeline. The pharmaceutical industry has quickly prioritized the drug development programs with a multitude of small molecules, therapeutic proteins and vaccines currently in clinical phase with a hope to tackle this pandemic. The discipline of Clinical Pharmacology continues to play a critical role in this effort by implementing model informed drug development (MIDD) approaches and therein providing scientific rigor and efficiency across different aspects such as study design, dose selection and drug repurposing. This plenary session will highlight some of these aspects and the role of MIDD and clinical pharmacology at large in fighting pandemics such as COVID19.
